The First Lie by Tamara Madison

The first lie comes out sharp:
first the pinprick feeling
then a little hiccup
but it works -- problem solved!

The second lie slips out
unexpected
like the second twin
no one knew was in there.

After that you exude them
like an odor.

You become a lie factory.
Lies issue out
like a steady stream
of packaged product
down the conveyor belt
of your tongue
out the chute of your mouth
and into waiting ears
of those conditioned

to claw the wrapping
off the cheap crap
you’ve manufactured
for so long you don’t even know
it’s crap; you’ve even come
to think it’s poetry.
