Keep your face to the sunshine
and shadows will fall behind you. -- Walt Whitman

In the Dark by Dolores Duggan

The cat is crying to get out
Into the back garden where his protein lies
Dead under the deck.
A tiny bird in yellow
But minus a few feathers.

The dog looks sad as I turn out the lights
In my living room.
No one to pet her.
I think she’s afraid of the dark.
The red lamp stays on.

My room is dark and the crimson wall
Shadow dances as the moonlight
Seeps past the curtains.
I lock the door and cry.
I’m afraid of the light.
