Keep your face to the sunshine
and shadows will fall behind you. -- Walt Whitman

Twenty-Five by Robert Beveridge

a birthday seizan

In these days that we have chosen
to walk this path together, you
turn twenty-five. I could tell
you, 'cause I've been there, that the new

year will likely be a carbon
copy of the old. But I
at twenty-five was still a drunk,
broke poet, barely getting by

on others' generosity.
You are different, self-assured
and with a sense of knowledge I
still haven't found. So just look forward

to the coming year. Instead of wisdom
I don't have, I offer this:
a quiet love, a promise I'll
be here, when you have need of it.
